Walter Wiswell DHS1939 Obituary by Margaret Crary Sager DHS1961

Another DHS alum passes......Walt Wiswell. He & his wife, Virlene lived on Centennial when I was a kid, four or five doors from Corlis Williamson.  They were a very nice couple.

(February 22, 1922 - June 11, 2013) 

Walter Virgil Wiswell, 91, Deadwood, SD, died Tuesday, June 11, 2013 at the David M. Dorsett Healthcare Center in Spearfish.

Walt was born February 22, 1922 to Walter and Anna (Clauser) Wiswell, in Deadwood. He attended St. Ambrose Parochial School for eight years and graduated from Deadwood High School in 1939.

He worked at a photograph shop for two years, before becoming an auto parts manager at Hendrie and Boltoff, which was later W & R Auto Parts. He also was a car salesman, retiring in 1978. After retirement, he managed Hidden Treasure Convenience Store in Central City.

Walt served as a church Lector and Eucharist for years. He also was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Elks Lodge.

Walt and Virlene Eickmann were married on June 9, 1947 at St. Ambrose Catholic Church. They were married for 64 years, before Virlene passed away.

Walt is survived by his nephews and nieces; John Iverson, Belle Fourche, Walter Howard (Sue) Iverson, Colorado, Phyllis (Gerald) Pokorney and Francis (Eileen) Iverson, both of Deadwood, Virlene (Don) Oxford and Paul Iverson, both of Lead; along with many great-nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Virlene, brother Oliver, sister, Ann Iverson, nephew Robert Iverson and niece Carol Ann Iverson.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 AM, Saturday, June 15, at St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Deadwood. A rosary will be said at 10:15AM, prior to the mass. Burial will follow at Oakridge Cemetery near Deadwood. 

A lunch will be provided by the Altar Society at the church follow the burial.
Memorials may be directed to benefit a charity of your choice in Uncle Walt’s memory.
