<div style="line-height: 17px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="background-color: black; color: white; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Jill was born Aug 30, 1939 to Lawrence and Verna (Traverson) Anfinson in Deadwood, SD. Her family moved several times throughout her childhood but returned to Deadwood where Jill graduated from Deadwood High School in 1957. After finishing her 2-year degree from Black Hills Teachers College, Jill married her high school sweetheart, Jerry Pontius, on June 26, 1959. She later went on to receive her bachelor’s degree in education from Black Hills Teachers College and was a substitute teacher for many years in the Lead-Deadwood public schools. She was a ski instructor at Deer Mountain during the early years of its operation.</span></div>
<div style="line-height: 17px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="background-color: black; color: white; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 17px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="background-color: black; color: white; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Jill was a devoted wife and mother of three boys, and always active in serving the community. She was named outstanding Jaycette of the Year three different times and held almost every office in Jaycettes during the 10 years she was involved. As a follower of Christ, she served in her church, Trinity United Methodist, in a variety of roles – president of the local UMW group and treasurer at the district level, Sunday school and release time classroom teacher – and was quick to help wherever there was a need. Her compassion and generous heart often led her to reach out to others in need with meals, housework help, and care of the children. She always remembered birthdays and anniversaries and was a wonderful wife, mother, grandma and great- grandma who will be greatly missed.</span></div>

always loved. We know that she was fishing as soon as her soul was free
to soar.</span></span><br />

berries and fruit for canning and jelly or syrup, a tradition which she
shared with her own mom. She spent countless hours watching h<span style="background-color: black;"></span>er kids
play sports and simply being with her immediate and extended family. She
always shared her faith of the Lord with her husband and kids, even up
to her very last breath.</span></span><br />

<span style="background-color: black; color: white;">Linda (Keehn) Maxwell DHS1966, age 66, passed away July 12, 2014 at Belle Fourche Health Care Center</span><br />

<span style="background-color: black; color: white;">.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="background-color: black; color: white;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="background-color: black; color: white;">Linda was born May 1, 1948 in Flandreau, SD to Lew and Marion Keehn. Linda grew up in Deadwood, graduating from Deadwood High School and then attending Black Hills State College.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="background-color: black; color: white;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="background-color: black; color: white;">One of her fondest life adventures away from the Black Hills was living in Wasilla, Alaska where she made many life-long friends and memories. She returned home in 1980 to learn the fine art of being a Saloonkeeper, prankster and memory maker at the family business, Saloon No. 10.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="background-color: black; color: white;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="background-color: black; color: white;">In the page of Deadwood's history it will be noted that Linda was Deadwood's first female Reserve Police Officer. Her talents were many, but her most acclaim would be for her famous cheesecakes. She took home countless awards for 1st place. She proudly handed out her business card with the title "Cheesecake Diva". In January of 2009, with dignity and grace, she changed her title and business card to "Wheelchair Diva".</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="background-color: black; color: white;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="background-color: black; color: white;">Linda had a heart of gold. She always marched to the beat of her own drum, but on the drop of a dime was there to help a friend in need. She loved her girlfriends and their escapades on the road. In her final years at Belle, she developed many new friendships with her caregivers. She was always ready with needed advice, a good joke and bottomless chocolate dish.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="background-color: black; color: white;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="background-color: black; color: white;">She is survived by her brother Gary, sisters Louie and Lori, and many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephew.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="background-color: black; color: white;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="background-color: black; color: white;">Linda will be greatly missed and admired by all. Her final lesson to us all is to live life to its fullest. Keep the faith. Love a giraffe.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="background-color: black; color: white;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="background-color: black; color: white;">Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 17, 2014, at 1 pm, at the historic St. John's Episcopal Church in Deadwood. Burial will follow at Oakridge Cemetery. Please join us following the burial for her "secret recipe cheesecake" and spirits at the Charlie Utter Theatre. In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established for the ongoing repairs and improvements to St. John's Church.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">I </span><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">knew Ron his whole life. He was my friend. <br /><br />Chybas, Allens, Veitls, Lesters, myself, and others lived in the neighborhood behind the Deadwood Hospital. Ron was much younger than the rest of us so he was always left behind. As a result he was loner when growing up. He attended the Deadwood School and was already in high school when he and his mother moved to California. After high school graduation Ron attended college. <br /><br />Being extremely intelligent, he was interested in computing and electronics. He excelled at ESCO Technologies with major contributions. Ron was always a voracious reader and developed mystical beliefs along with a strong wanderlust to travel. His computing ID was Shivaron from his interest in the Hindu Shiva. Ron’s belief of Shiva set his spiritual life and minimalist quiet lifestyle of a complete loner. His wonderlust to travel was strong so he lived wherever he had a interest to be. <br /><br />He left California and ESCO and eventually returned to Deadwood and the Black Hills. At one time he had a rough terrain motorbike and completely explored the Black Hills. </span></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Ron and I spent quiet times </span><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">talking and at my urging, he explained his beliefs and lifestyle. He agreed it was different that most people but observed it was not a life for most people.<br /> </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">For his last destination he moved to Kauai HI USA as he felt his exploration of the Black Hills was complete. Little was heard from Ron until his death.<br /><br />I did receive an email from Shivaron two years ago that addressed my email question of his writing about cave living:<br /><br />Ron’s email response reads:</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><i>DickD wrote: "For a cave, how you (Ron) picked the spot, planning, access, cave set up, how you passed time, experiences, and why you gave up on the idea. So.. there was never a "giving up on the idea" or "feeling a strong need to leave. True, it would make for a GREAT human interest story on your website if that were the case. <span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><i>I can tell you truthfully that one night at one of my base camps and on a full moon, a pack of four or five coyotes showed up and began howling just a few yards from my tent. I attached some significance to that encounter at the time because it just happened to be on the morning of my birthday!<br /><br />Also, I can address the issue of not feeling alone. As a kid, I spent a lot of time by myself in the forest behind our old house on Stewart St. I would hike up to White Rocks or Devil's Cave and eat lunch there or sometimes take a book and climb a tree and read. I read the entire book "Old Yeller" in a tree. It was during that period that I learned to feel comfortable being alone. Early on I realized one could feel "lonely" in a crowd of people and also one can feel "crowded" when all by oneself. It occurred to me that it's simply a point of view. It was one of those "Aha" moments that I've always valued. No matter what circumstances I've found myself in throughout my life, I've never felt crowded OR alone. But more importantly I've never made decisions based on that kind of subjective perception. </i></span></div>

<b><span style="font-size: large;">Chan Biggs' Obituary</span><br /><span style="font-size: small;">1942 - 2014<br />DHS1960</span></b><br />
<br />
<b>Chanler Clarence - "Chan" - Biggs</b> passed away early Sunday February 8, 2014 after a long illness. He was born in Denver, Colorado, in 1942, and spent most of his youth through high school in Deadwood, SD. Chan served in the U.S. Navy before graduating from Oregon State University and joining the U.S. Bureau of Land Management. He spent much of his career with the BLM working on the Missouri River and the Fort Benton and Lewis &Clark Visitors Centers. <br />
<br />
Chan's knowledge of the Missouri River Breaks' flora, fauna, geology and history was encyclopedic. In 1984 he accompanied Jacques Cousteau and a film crew as they traveled the Missouri River between Fort Benton and Fort Peck dam filming a documentary about the Mississippi-Missouri system. He was also co-author of the 2001 book <i>Montana's Wild and Scenic Upper Missouri River Guidebook, </i>and was featured in William Least Heat-Moon's 1999 book<i> River Horse</i>. Chan cared passionately about the preservation of Montana's natural and cultural heritage and public understanding of that heritage. He was an active member in the National Association of Interpreters and served as the group's president in 1998. <br />
<br />
Chan took great joy in introducing his children and other family and friends to the Missouri River, and his children believe to this day that teaching them to maneuver a jet boat through rocky waters or a canoe through rapids was his way of preparing them for life's challenges. Chan's family will also remember him fondly for his supporting role in the B movie “Ski Troop Attack”, a 1960 “classic” filmed in the Black Hills near Deadwood. Chan’s full bio on the Internet Movie Database (IMDb) reads: “Chan Biggs is an actor, known for Ski Troop Attack (1960).” The curious and the doubters are invited to view the full length movie on YouTube. <br />
<br />
One of his other great loves was singing in a barbershop quartet, performing at events large and small. He was also an honorary member of the Great Falls Garden Club, designing award winning yearbooks for their events. <br />
<br />
Chan is survived by his wife, Patricia, children Michelle "Shelby" Zenahlik and Daniel Biggs, and three grandchildren, as well as three siblings: sisters Barbara Biggs (Denver), Patrice Williamson (Spearfish, SD) and brother Gary (Omaha). He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Frances Biggs, his brother Byron, and wife Kally. <br />
<br />
Chan's family will welcome friends to an Open House in his honor on Saturday, February 15, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. at 3925 6th Avenue South, Great Falls, MT. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that donations in Chan's honor be made to the Friends of the Missouri Breaks Monument (www.missouribreaks.org) and the River And Plains Society, Inc. of Fort Benton, MT. Contributions can be sent to the family or directly to these organizations. </div>

Lillian attended rural school in Polson School District and graduated from Deadwood High School. Lillian took commercial courses in high school and enjoyed a career in business administration for over 50 years. She started as bookkeeper for the Fish & Hunter Co. in Deadwood, a wholesale/retail building material and hardware company with yards in Rapid City, Belle Fourche, Lead, Deadwood, New Underwood, Wasta and Owanka.</span></div>

<div style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 17px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="background-color: black; color: yellow;">James Shea worked for Fish & Hunter Co. also. He left to serve in the Navy Air Corps in 1941. He graduated in November from Pensacola, Florida, as a pilot. He and Lillian were married on January 13, 1945 while he was home on leave. They lived in Kansas and Florida during the war. He was transferred to Hawaii, the Pacific Theater.</span></div>

<div style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 17px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="background-color: black; color: yellow;">When the war ended, Jim went to work for Porter Lumber Co. and Lillian returned to Fish & Hunter. They built their home on lower Main Street in Deadwood in 1948.</span></div>
<div style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 17px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="background-color: black; color: yellow;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 17px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="background-color: black; color: yellow;">In 1960 they decided to open a retail building and hardware store, Shea’s Inc., on Deadwood’s Main Street. Lillian served as accountant and secretary. Jim was general manager and his brother Joseph was vice president and advisor.</span></div>

<div style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 17px; text-align: justify;">

<div style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 17px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="background-color: black; color: yellow;">Lillian's life was a testimony of helping others, kindness to all, and she touched the lives of countless people in her century of life. Always humble and not wanting a lot of attention, she was so excited for her 100th birthday party in May and the large family reunion held in conjunction with the celebration. Lillian enjoyed planting flowers, feeding the birds and other small wildlife, and the companionship of the dogs they had. Lillian had a "Daily Prayer" that she copied and gave to many to make sure they knew Jesus as their Savior. She was a member of St. Ambrose Catholic Church for many years. Her husband, James Shea, preceded her in death in April, 2007. After his death, she lived alone in her own home until the time of her death.</span></div>
